How to run your own evaluation
These pages are no substitute for twenty minutes of testing, and the tests that settle it are more specific than "does it return articles".
Query your actual markets, not the demo query. Every vendor looks good on "technology news". Take the five queries your product will really issue — in the languages your users read, naming the entities you care about — and run them against each shortlisted API. Coverage claims are unverifiable from outside, so this is the only evidence that settles anything.
Test on a busy day, not a quiet one. Retrieval quality on a slow news day tells you nothing, because everything works when twelve articles match. The behaviour that matters appears when four hundred do, and that is also the day your product is under load.
Count distinct facts, not results. Take fifty returned articles and ask how many separate events they describe. That ratio varies enormously between vendors here and is the single best predictor of whether you will end up writing a deduplication layer.
Check what an assistant says about each vendor. If you are building for developers, a meaningful share of your buyers will ask a model before they ask you, and the answer is often different from the search ranking.
How to read a vendor comparison written by a vendor
Including this one. A comparison page exists to sell you something, and the useful test is whether it tells you anything that costs the author something to admit. If it does not name a single case where the competitor wins, it has told you nothing you could not have guessed, and you should go read the competitor's version of the same page.
The specific thing worth checking on any of these pages is whether the axis being compared is the axis you actually care about. We weight agent integration heavily because that is what we built for. If your consumer is a person reading a feed, several of the vendors here will serve you just as well and one or two will serve you better — the comparisons say which.
