Unzoi vs TheNewsAPI
A budget-tier news API aimed at small projects and side builds.
Where a low price is exactly the right call
There is a category of project where this is unambiguously the best choice on this page: an internal dashboard, a prototype validating whether anyone wants the feature, a hobby project, or a product where news is a small supporting element rather than the core. In all of those the requirement really is "show recent relevant headlines", the failure cost is low, and paying ten times more to handle syndication would be waste.
The cheapest published entry point we found
Sixteen dollars a month, or nineteen billed monthly, is the lowest published number in this survey by a wide margin — the next cheapest published entry tier is more than ten times that. If your project has a real but small budget and keyword headlines meet the requirement, this is a rational choice and the rest of this page will not change that. Not every workload needs semantic retrieval, and paying for capability you will not use is not sophistication.
What the free tier does not tell you
Source and language access are gated to paid tiers, which means the free tier cannot answer the question you most need answered: is the coverage there for the outlets and languages I care about? You will be paying, at least for one month, to find out. At this price that is a defensible experiment rather than a real commitment, which is a meaningfully different situation from vendors whose first paid step is several hundred dollars.
Budget for the second year, not just the first
Cheap APIs get expensive through workarounds. If you end up writing deduplication, query expansion for synonyms, and a retry layer to compensate for keyword misses, the engineering time will exceed the price difference within a quarter and you will own that code indefinitely. Whether that happens depends entirely on your use case: a headline widget will never need any of it, and an alerting system will need all three. Decide which you are building before deciding on price.
Where TheNewsAPI is the better choice
- The cheapest published entry point in the category

Choose TheNewsAPI if price is the deciding factor and keyword search meets your needs.
Where an agent-first buyer hits friction
- Source and language access are gated behind the paid tier, so the free tier does not represent the product
- No semantic retrieval or story grouping
- No MCP surface
