What does the science and research topic actually cover?
Findings that reach a general audience, research funding and policy, institutional and space-programme coverage, and the steady stream of studies rewritten from press releases. It spans a very wide subject range held together only by the fact that a researcher is involved.
How do I filter news to science and research?
Pass topic=SCIENCE on /search or /stories. Hybrid mode is close to mandatory. Science reporting restates the paper in general language, and a query written in the terms the paper uses will miss the coverage while a query in the terms the coverage uses will miss the paper. Pair with a country for funding and policy, which are national arguments.

Mistaking coverage for significance. What is covered is what a press office promoted, in a field a desk already follows, phrased so a general reader will click. The correlation between coverage volume and scientific importance is weak and occasionally inverted, and it is strongest for subjects that photograph well.
Who publishes on it
Dedicated science desks at a small number of titles do the substantive work. A much larger tier rewrites embargoed press releases with little added, which is where most of the volume and nearly all of the duplication comes from. Specialist outlets in a given field carry detail the general press omits entirely.

articles each. The busiest is itbear.com.cn at roughly 9%,
and itbear.com.cn, sina.com.cn, cfi.net.cn account for about 19% between them.
Flat enough that volume here translates fairly directly into independent reporting rather than one newsroom publishing repeatedly.
What it is best for
Best for tracking what has reached the public and how it was framed, and for funding and policy shifts. Weakest as a measure of research activity, for which publication and grant databases are the actual source.
Monitoring it over time
Journal embargoes synchronise publication, so most of the week-to-week variation is a calendar artefact. Establish the embargo rhythm for the journals relevant to you and read deviations from it. A finding covered outside that rhythm usually reached the press some other way, which is itself worth knowing.
Which signals pair with science and research?
Topic filtering answers what an article is about. Signals answer how strongly it reads that way and in what register, so combining them is usually sharper than either alone.
