What does the elections topic actually cover?
Campaign coverage, results and their contestation, electoral administration and the disputes that follow. It spans a very short intense period and a much longer, quieter aftermath that most monitoring never reaches.
How do I filter news to elections?
Pass topic=ELECTION on /search or /stories. Pair with a country and bound tightly around the date, but set the window to start well before polling and end well after it. Hybrid mode helps with campaign vocabulary, which is coined during the campaign and does not exist in any earlier corpus.

Setting the window on polling day. Volume peaks after polls close, not before, so a window centred on the date captures the result and misses the campaign that explains it. Worse, disputes and administrative failures surface over the following weeks at a fraction of the volume, which means a threshold tuned to election-night traffic will never fire for them.
Who publishes on it
National press dominates and is where framing is set. International wires engage for the result and for anything unexpected, then leave. Local and regional press carries polling-station administration, which is where irregularities are reported first and almost exclusively.

Flat enough that volume here translates fairly directly into independent reporting rather than one newsroom publishing repeatedly.
What it is best for
Best for results, framing comparison across outlets and countries, and for following a dispute through to its resolution. Weakest as a predictor: coverage volume reflects editorial interest and campaign spending, and it has no useful relationship to how people will vote.
Monitoring it over time
Run two windows with different thresholds. A high-volume one across the campaign and result, and a low-volume one for the four to six weeks after, scoped to local press, where the administrative story lives. The second is where anything genuinely new appears and it will never trip a threshold set for the first.
Which signals pair with elections?
Topic filtering answers what an article is about. Signals answer how strongly it reads that way and in what register, so combining them is usually sharper than either alone.
