Armed conflict news API
Hostilities, military operations and their consequences. Pass topic=ARMEDCONFLICT to filter.
What this covers
Active conflict reporting, military operations, casualties and the diplomatic activity around them. One of the most heavily syndicated topics in the index, and one where publisher position affects which facts appear at all.
Querying it
Scope by publisher country or a fixed outlet set, and collapse to stories. An unscoped query returns a very large volume of near-identical wire coverage plus commentary, and the ratio of original reporting to pickup is lower here than almost anywhere else.
GET /stories?topic=ARMEDCONFLICT&mode=hybrid&from=2026-07-24&limit=20 What catches people out
Treating outlet count as corroboration. Conflict reporting propagates through wire services faster than almost any other subject, so forty outlets frequently means one source. Weight by distinct originating publishers, and expect accounts from different jurisdictions to differ on specifics rather than only on framing.
Who publishes on it
Wire services dominate volume overwhelmingly, with national outlets in affected and neighbouring countries adding original reporting. The ratio of original to syndicated is among the lowest of any topic, and publisher jurisdiction affects which facts appear.
What it is best for
Best for tracking the pace and geographic spread of events when collapsed to stories. Weakest for establishing facts, since accounts differ by publisher jurisdiction in ways no filter resolves — this needs corroboration across independent origins rather than volume.
Monitoring it over time
Corroboration requires distinct originating outlets, not distinct domains, and establishing that from the response takes deliberate work. Treat the outlet list as a starting point rather than an answer. Coverage volume also responds to journalist access as much as to events, so a quiet period may reflect that reporting became impossible rather than that less happened.
Signals that pair with it
Topic filtering answers what an article is about. Signals answer how strongly it reads that way and in what register, so combining them is usually sharper than either alone.
