Domestic Spanish coverage sits inside a much larger Spanish-language stream spanning Latin America, so an unscoped language query is not a query about Spain.

The media landscape

National dailies with pronounced editorial alignment, strong regional press in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, and a large sports press. The regional-language titles fall outside the Spanish-language filter, so a Spanish-language query about Spain misses part of the domestic conversation entirely. The sports press deserves specific mention because it is among the highest-volume publishing sectors in the market and it bleeds into general news constantly — club ownership, stadium financing and broadcasting rights are business stories filed by sports desks, and a query about investment or media rights returns them whether or not you wanted them. Editorial alignment is strong enough that outlet identity predicts framing better than the date does, so fix the outlet set before comparing anything over time.

Does this cover articles published in Spain, or about it?

About it. The country filter matches the places an article is about, so a wire piece about Spain filed from London is in scope and a Spain outlet writing about somewhere else is not. To filter by where the publisher is based, use publisher_country instead, and combine the two when you want domestic reporting about the domestic market.

How do I filter news to Spain?

Weakest when used as a proxy for Spanish-language coverage generally, which it is not. Regional-language reporting sits outside the main language filter and covers a partly different agenda.

Narrowing further

Two constraints do most of the work on this axis. Adding a language separates domestic reporting from international commentary about Spain, which an unscoped country query returns together. Adding a signal range with a lower bound narrows to articles written in a particular register — supply disruption, financial stress, conflict — rather than to articles that merely mention the subject.
