What coverage of India looks like

A very large domestic press publishing in English alongside more than a dozen major regional languages. English-language Indian outlets carry a summary of what the Hindi, Tamil and Bengali press report in detail.

The media landscape

English-language nationals, regional-language dailies with circulations larger than most European nationals, and a dense digital tail. Ownership concentration matters here: several large groups publish across languages, so apparent diversity can be one editorial position in four scripts. Filter by outlet rather than assuming language variety implies independent reporting.

Does this cover articles published in India, or about it?

About it. The country filter matches the places an article is about, so a wire piece about India filed from London is in scope and a India outlet writing about somewhere else is not. To filter by where the publisher is based, use publisher_country instead, and combine the two when you want domestic reporting about the domestic market.

How do I filter news to India?

Query the country filter alongside language rather than relying on English alone, or you will systematically miss what Indian readers are actually reading.

HTTP
GET /search?country=IN&mode=hybrid&from=2026-07-24&limit=20

Identifiers are FIPS 10-4, not ISO 3166 — why that matters.

What catches people out with India coverage?

English-language volume here is deceptive. It is large enough to look like full coverage while representing a fraction of what is published, and the regional-language press carries the detail on agriculture, state politics and rural economics. Transliteration of names is unstable across scripts, so entity filters outperform name strings whenever a person or company is the subject.

Which outlets cover India most?

The most active publisher on this country is indiatimes.com at roughly 8% of the coverage, and the three busiest — indiatimes.com, aninews.in, newkerala.com — carry about 13% between them. That share is worth reading before the volume figure: concentrated coverage means a large result count can still be a small number of newsrooms. Combine country with source to narrow to publishers you trust, or with language to separate domestic reporting from international.

What this market is best for

Best for domestic policy, agriculture, state-level politics and the consumer economy, where the depth in regional languages has no English equivalent. Weakest if queried only in English, which returns a summary layer written for a different audience. This is the market where language choice changes the answer most. State-level reporting deserves particular attention: administration, land, water and industrial policy are decided by states rather than centrally, and the reporting that matters is produced in the state language by titles with no English edition at all. A query about Indian policy that returns only national English coverage has usually missed the level of government that actually decides the thing being asked about.

Narrowing further

Two constraints do most of the work on this axis. Adding a language separates domestic reporting from international commentary about India, which an unscoped country query returns together. Adding a signal range with a lower bound narrows to articles written in a particular register — supply disruption, financial stress, conflict — rather than to articles that merely mention the subject.
